The Wareham Fire District Water Department will be erecting a sign to commemorate the purchase of 77 acres of land they will turn into conservation area.

The new area will be called the Maple Springs Conservation Area and the sign commemorating its purchase will be erected at the entrance to the conservation area Monday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m.

The land was once a cranberry bog owned by the A.D. Makepeace company and with the help of a $350,000 state grant, the water department purchased the land for $1.15 million.

The water department purchased the land because it sits above the departments wells and conserving it will help improve water quality.

In order to get to the conservation area, citizens need to take Maple Springs Road to the end of the road, bear left at the bog on the left and go over the canal bridge. Continue straight past the Maple Springs Water Treatment Plant on the left and go straight to the end of the dirt road.
