Vikings Field Hockey to add players from Mashpee High School due to low participation
The Wareham High School field hockey team will be merging with the Mashpee High School team for the upcoming fall season.
The two schools are merging due to low participation in field hockey according to Wareham Athletic Director Ed Rodrigues.
Field hockey is typically played with 11 people on the field per team but last year, the Vikings only had 10 players to send out. Now, the team will be split about 10 kids from Wareham and six or seven from Mashpee, who will travel to Wareham every day for practice.
Rodrigues added despite the merge, the team will still be called the Wareham Vikings because it is mostly Wareham kids but some home games may be played in Mashpee.
The merge is not permanent, according to Rodrigues. He told the School Committee in their Sept. 21 meeting they are “going to do this for next year and see where it goes.”
“The team is just trying to survive,” he said.
