The team's season kicked off from the starting lines at Wheaton College Wednesday, Dec. 17 against the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School.
Head Coach Chris Gardner said that the group is like many others he's coached for the past 17 years. The sport attracts what he calls, "highly competitive and accountable," athletes.
"It's a team sport but it's an individual sport, too," Gardner said. "You're out there by yourself and you're depending on yourself to do well."
With a smaller roster this year, Gardner said the team has been practicing more technical aspects during practices. From hurdles to shotput, most of the team are able to focus more on the skills they need to improve on their own.
"We think the kids that want to do well and succeed are the ones that are here the most often," he said.
Some of the girls have already qualified for the divisional meet and have goals they are close to reaching. Sophomore Ingrid Beaudoin has been running since 8th grade and said she enjoys the longer form running.
"I like getting lost in my thoughts. I can just keep going and I don't really have to think about anything," Beaudoin said.
Motivation is something she said she hopes to work on this season as she is in the, "go with the flow," mindset right now.
"I hope to improve, make better friends and have more social interactions— that kind of thing," she said.
The Vikings will find themselves back on the track Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. at Wheaton College.
