Wareham boys tennis making racket across the season
The Wareham High School boys tennis team is heading into the postseason after setting a new program record for wins during the regular season.
Coach Evan Wilga said the Vikings eclipsed the program’s previous wins record while securing a spot in the state tournament for the second straight season.
“It’s been great so far,” Wilga said. “We’ve eclipsed our all-time record for wins, and we’ve been in the playoffs for a couple weeks now. We’re just waiting to see where we’re seeded.”
Wareham played 21 matches during the regular season and enters the postseason with what Wilga described as a balanced roster led by experienced seniors and younger contributors.
“We have a very good group of seniors and a very good mix of underclassmen,” Wilga said. “I hope we can make a few rounds in the playoffs.”
Wilga said the demanding schedule created challenges throughout the season, limiting the amount of practice time available for the team.
“We played 21 matches, so we haven’t had a lot of practice time,” Wilga said. “But if you think about the matches as practices, then I guess it all equals out. We’ve had a lot of games, so we’re battle-tested so far.”
One of the team’s biggest strengths this season has been doubles play. According to Wilga, Wareham has consistently dominated doubles matches throughout the spring.
“We’ve done really well in doubles this year,” Wilga said. “We’ve swept almost every match we’ve played in doubles.”
Last season, Wareham qualified for the tournament but lost to Bourne in the first round. This year, the Vikings are expected to earn a higher playoff seed and could potentially host a postseason match.
“We definitely have a good team this year,” Wilga said. “I think we could make a few rounds at least. It’s just a matter of where we’re drawn and who we play.”
