Wareham native shines, shatters and shows out in debut poetry book
From sitting in Ms. Anastasia's english classes at Wareham High School to writing poetry for her first published book, Wareham native Emily Lowe has lived by one saying her entire life.
"'Your life's a book that only you can write,'" she said. "I've always felt that even though a picture can tell you a lot, a thousand words can tell you more."
Lowe's poetry book, "Shine and Shatter," released digitally on Amazon in early November with physical copies available for purchase Wednesday, Nov. 19.
With a degree in agricultural science and two young children at home, Lowe has never had poetry as a major focus in her life until recently. Contracting Covid-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pneumonia in 2022, she said that writing came after her hospital stay and subsequent divorce.
"I used poetry as a way to heal," she said.
With friends and family urging her to keep going with her poetry pursuits, Lowe used her words to help those she loved. She said that although she's only 30-years-old, she has gone through a lot of trauma and is glad she found a way to share her story.
"There's some moments where you feel like you're on top of the world and others where you're crumbling," she said. "So you just have to ride the highs and lows in life."
Readers can expect to feel a range of emotions when picking up the book, according to Lowe. Finally publishing her poetry is something she said feels "surreal."
"The whole book is shaped to start you at a shattered point emotion-wise," she said. "Toward the middle it brings out a sweet bliss with laughter. It ends with aa person dying from Covid. Shatter, shine and shatter again. It'll take you for a loop for sure."
