Three Gatemen drafted: one gone, others to stay in college

Jul 5, 2016

Gatemen players Harrison Wenson, Jackson Lamb, and Cole Freeman were drafted for Major League Baseball teams in June.

Lamb has already left the Gatemen and is negotiating a contract to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. A junior from the University of Michigan, he plans to finish his degree eventually.

Lamb said he was surprised he was drafted because he went through "a little bit of a rough patch" and was hurt during his sophomore year.

"[Being drafted] is something that I wanted to happen but didn't know if it would actually happen," he said. When asked what his appeal to the Cardinals might have been, he said, "I think they like that I'm a competitor."

Lamb was in Wareham for only two weeks before leaving.

This is Wenson's second time being drafted. The first time, he was a senior in high school and was offered a position with the Detriot Tigers. He decided then to pursue a degree first and will finish his final year at the University of Michigan before joining the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wenson said he has always been a Michigan fan and wants to end his college baseball career on a high note, seeing his team through a championship victory.

Freeman turned down the Dodgers' offer because it didn't meet his requests for a starting salary. Though the team tried negotiating higher starting salaries, Freeman decided he'd finish college and keep pursuing a degree in business.
