Jul 8, 2024

Two people were brought to the hospital after a head-on collision outside Wareham Elementary School on Monday, July 8.

The crash involved a silver Toyota Highlander and a black GMC Sierra.

A Massachusetts State Police Trooper on site said that, while she hadn’t done a full investigation yet, it looked like the Toyota Highlander had crossed into the other lane.

The Toyota Highlander sat facing east in the westbound lane of Minot Avenue, just outside the exit to the elementary school.

The GMC Sierra sat facing west in the westbound lane.

Both vehicles had severe damage to their front ends and the GMC’s airbags had gone off.

According to Wareham Fire Department Chief John Kelley, the sole occupant of each vehicle was transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

The driver of the Toyota was brought to Tobey Memorial Hospital and the driver of the GMC was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.

Kelley could not comment on either driver's condition. Each drivers’ town of residence is unknown at this time.

The Wareham Police Department announced the closure of the road around 1:45 p.m. By 2:15 p.m., state police were on the scene investigating the crash. According to the department, the road will open shortly after 4 p.m.

The crash is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and the Wareham Police DepartmentS, said Kelley.
