Cooling center will open to combat extreme heat this week
The town is gearing up for a potential heat wave that could bring nearly 100 degree temperatures to Wareham this week.
Wareham Emergency Management is opening up an emergency cooling center on the first floor of the Wareham Emergency Operation Center at 48 Marion Road from 12 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3.
Wareham has been placed under an extreme heat watch from Wednesday morning through Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service. The high heat coupled with humidity could drive "dangerously hot" heat index values of up to 108 degrees in the afternoons.
The cooling center will have air conditioning and water bottles available for residents looking to combat the heat, according to Emergency Management Director Calib LaRue.
According to the National Weather Service, Wareham is at a "major" heat risk from Wednesday through Friday. Residents are recommended to use air conditioning, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, limit outdoor activities during peak heat in the afternoon and to stay hydrated.
According to LaRue, the emergency management department is monitoring the heat watch.
