Council on Aging plans October events

The Council on Aging has planned a boatload of activities for seniors this October. 

The center at 48 Marion Rd. will be open for office hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Masks must be worn in the center, as in the rest of the town’s buildings. 

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, eligible seniors can sign up for a monthly distribution of fresh food and supplies that will be available on the fourth Friday of each month between 9 and 10 a.m. The program, in cooperation with the Greater Boston Food Bank, is open to seniors aged 60 or older who have an income under $1,400 per month. Bring ID on Oct. 7 to sign up for a year.

On Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 9:15 a.m., learn to make greeting cards. A $3 donation is requested for this class, which includes enough materials to make four or five cards. Class size is limited. Sign up by calling 508-291-3130.

On Friday, Oct. 15, make an autumn arrangement with the Wareham Garden Club at 10:30 a.m. The class size is limited. Call 508-291-3130.

Marge Blinstrub will teach a series of fitness classes, which are being held temporarily at the Wareham Free Library. Circuit classes will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Mondays. Country Line Dancing classes will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Fridays. The classes cost $3 each which can be paid at the door. No advance registration is necessary. 

Weekly events

Each Monday, join a lively group of seniors for coffee and conversation from 9 to 10 a.m. The event is usually held behind the Multiservice Center, but is held at the Cranberry Cafe in case of inclement weather.

Play Mahjong at 1 p.m. each Tuesday at the Cranberry Café. Anyone interested in learning is invited to arrive for instruction at noon.

Every Monday, play cribbage from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 208.

Weekly Coffee and Conversation takes place each Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Cranberry Café.

On Tuesdays, play chair volleyball at 10 a.m. at the Multiservice Center. Or, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, do Tai Chi at the Multiservice Center.

Each Wednesday at 10 a.m., join a Walking Group at the Middle School Track. Sign up by calling 508-291-3130. Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., make mats for the homeless in Room 102. All materials are provided.

On Thursdays, Pam will lead Chair Yoga at 2 p.m. at the Multiservice Center. Sign up by calling 508-291-3130.

Grab and Go Box Lunches are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, courtesy of the Old Colony Elder Services. Lunches must be reserved at least three days in advance by calling 508-291-3130, and can be picked up at the Multiservice Center handicap ramp between 9 and 9:30 a.m. The menu is available on Facebook and in the Senior Beacon.

Reminders from the COA

Senior tac work-off program forms are available in the Council on Aging office. 

Volunteers are needed for programs including Meals on Wheels. Forms are available in the office. For more information, call 508-291-3130.
