Town to consider curbside pick-up, transfer station

Jul 1, 2020

Selectman Jim Munise, who also serves on the Carver Marion Wareham Regional Refuse Disposal District Committee, gave the Board of Selectman a brief update on the town’s plans for waste disposal at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The current agreement with Covanta-SEMASS will expire at the end of 2020, and the transfer station on Rte 28 in Rochester will close. The Benson Brook Transfer station will revert back to Marion’s ownership.

Munise, along with Town Administrator Derek Sullivan and others, is working on a request for proposals for possible curbside pick-up of trash in town.

Carver, which is in the same situation as Wareham, may work with Wareham on a joint solution — curbside pick-up or a transfer station.

Munise said that no matter what plan the town decides on, there will be some sticker shock for residents who have had virtually free trash disposal for decades.

However, he noted, whatever is decided will be cheaper than hiring a commercial hauler for curbside pick-up.
