Vikings Football uses soaps and suds to start the season

With water trickling down Merchants Way, drivers lined up with donations in hand to get a chance to get clean and give back.

The Wareham Vikings Football team held a car wash at the Wareham Fire Department Saturday, Aug. 2 to raise money for the upcoming season. Coach Cy Bariteau said that the team tries to come together often to fundraise.

"The kids actually asked me to do this again because they had a lot of fun last time," he said.

The vehicles passing through the teams care weren't the only thing getting cleaned. Many of the footballers walked around with soap suds in their hair, dodging water from their peers.

"They come out here and spray each other with water and have fun shouting out on the street trying to get people coming in," Bariteau said.

Greg Wujcik was taking a turn yelling for customers on Main Street. Although he found telling cars they could, "use a wash," didn't help bring in any revenue, he said he preferred holding signs to washing cars.

"My favorite thing to tell them is 'take a left into the car wash, it'll change your life,'" he said.

The Vikings Football team will begin practice Friday, Aug. 15 with their first game against the Hull Pirates Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. Bariteau said the car wash is a good way to get the team together before the season starts.

"It's what inspires me to do the wash," he said. "Raisng money and getting to see them together — they don't always see each other outside of the season."

Bariteau said that he has a strong team coming back this year with a few students having played since they were in eighth grade.

"They played through with us last year and they were good leaders," he said. "I think they learned a lot from the seniors last year."

The team has been busy in the off-season and are ready to get back onto the field this fall according to Bariteau.

"We've just been really stressing putting in the hard work," he said. "Work hard at the start of the season, let us coach them — learn what we need to do and we'll have a successful year."
