A white Christmas in Onset Village

Dec 11, 2022

“Santa is coming!,” shouted the talking Christmas tree at Dudley Brown Square.

The chilly weather did not stop Onset Christmas in the Village attendees from celebrating on Saturday, Dec. 10.

The Onset Bay Association has hosted Christmas in the Village since 1992, said Executive Director Kat Jones.

“It’s a long running tradition and it's our last big event of the year,” Jones said.

Candy cane markers led the way for pedestrians as they listened to carolers, created crafts and took pictures with Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman at Marc Anthony’s Pizzeria.

Twenty five local businesses opened their doors for holiday shoppers and offered activities such as writing letters to Santa.

“It’s the spirit of the season to bring the community together,” said Onset Bay Association Board Member Amanda Cobb.

Village visitors were shuttled from the Spinney Library to the Glen Cove Hotel on a festive trolley where Christmas carolers in Victorian garb sang classic tunes such as “Jingle Bells” and “White Christmas.” They passed by Dudley Square, where a talking Christmas tree gave seasonal greetings to passersby.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition opened its doors to chilly celebrators, offering goods from local vendors and a craft-making activity by Dianne Enzian of Dianne’s Art Farm.

Young crafters created lanterns using recycled water bottles, tissue paper and tea light candles.

“It's fun art, not fine art,” Enzian said.

Crafter Caleb Greene was not afraid to get his hands dirty as he wrapped his glue-covered bottle with red tissue paper.

“I kind of like picking the glue off my hands,” he said.

Despite his name, red is Greene’s favorite color.

“I’m going to use it as a reading lamp,” Greene said excitedly while holding up the finished product, complete with a reindeer sticker and pipe cleaners.

From Santa hats to elf ears, a festive time was had by all.

“This year it’s bigger and better than ever,” Cobb said.
