Town Hall, banks, stores, schools and other businesses were closed in Wareham on Thursday as 2018’s first major storm brought high winds and heavy, wet snow. The storm only dropped a few inches of snow, however, a couple hundred people were left without power at some point during the day.

Below is a timeline of the major and minor issues public safety officials and residents dealt with throughout the day.

6 a.m.

Wareham’s town wide parking ban begins and remains in effect until further notice.

7 a.m.

Rain and heavy winds begin. Roads are clear and traffic is light as motorists appear to heed officials’ warnings to travel only if absolutely necessary.

7:30 a.m.

Eversource reports that there are no power outages in Wareham.

9:07 a.m.

Wareham Fire Department Assistant Chief John Kelley reports that additional firefighters have been called in to help man the station during the storm. On Wednesday, Wareham public safety officials met to discuss storm strategy. Kelley said his department was well prepared.

“We’re a 24 hour operation and are always ready to handle whatever comes our way,” said Kelley.

10:17 a.m.

The rain has switched over to an icy mix and plows are stationed throughout town.

11:27 a.m.

Emergency broadcasts state there are flooding issues on Route 6 near the former 99 Restaurant.

11:30 a.m.

Eversource reports that of Wareham’s 14,567 customers just one is without electricity.

11:43 a.m.

Business is brisk in the Cup2Cafe coffee shop at 3175 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham. Manager Brittany Kaylor said the morning saw a steady stream of customers arrive before the worst of the storm began. Cup2Cafe closed at noon, but many other shops in town remained open including: Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street, Marion Road, Route 6 in East Wareham and at the Mobil Station on Cranberry Highway in West Wareham. Coffee is also available at Cumberland Farms on Main Street and Depot Street.

12:40 p.m.

Eversource reports that all of Wareham's 14,567 customers have electricity.

12:51 p.m.

The snow is starting to accumulate on roads and driving is becoming treacherous. Residents being advised to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.

1:46 p.m.

Emergency broadcasts report that a tree is down at the intersection of Arlington and Great Neck Roads. Arlington to Great Neck is impassable at this time. Municipal Maintenance has been dispatched to clear the road.

2:13 p.m.

Reports of power outages are starting to roll in. Ever source reports that 236 customers are currently without power.

2:18 p.m.

A downed cable line was reported in the area of 43 Longwood Ave.

2:20 p.m.

Onset Fire and Eversource crews were dispatched to the Benny’s building on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham to inspect building damage. According to emergency broadcasts, the building’s roof was damaged during the storm.

3:41 p.m.

Eversource reports that 230 Wareham customers are currently without power.

5 p.m.

The storm is winding down as snow has switched to sleet. Heavy winds have dissipated but it’s still gusty.

5:44 p.m.

Eversource has made progress in restoring power. At this time, 90 Wareham customers are without electricity.

6:41 p.m.

Eversource reports that all Wareham customers have electricity at this time.
