Update: Electric vehicle chargers planned for Main Street

Oct 15, 2024

The town is looking to install two electric vehicle chargers in the Main Street parking lot at Pezzoli Square, marking it the fourth location of its kind in Wareham.

There are chargers near the Stop and Shop on Cranberry Highways, off Tow Road near Nouria, off Viking Drive near Spillane Field and near the elementary school.

According to Town Administrator Derek Sullivan, the proposed EV chargers would be two dual-head level 3 chargers. Sullivan explained “Level 3 chargers will allow four cars to be charged at the same time, with each vehicle getting enough of a charge to travel 100 to 250 miles after 30 to 45 minutes of charging."

Revenue from the charging stations will likely be put into a fund that can be used to pay for maintenance of the chargers, Sullivan said.

According to Sullivan, most of the cost of the chargers and their installation – which can exceed $250,000 – will be paid for by rebates from Eversource and funds from the federal Inflation Reduction Act. He expects the cost to the town to be between $10,000 and $35,000.

Once installation begins, the project is expected to take nine months to complete.
At a September Select Board meeting, Sullivan explained that, once these chargers are installed and operational, he expects to install more chargers throughout the community.

Sullivan said he hopes that the chargers will help bring people into Wareham by giving them a place to charge their car near the downtown area
